Margaret Conway

May 25, 1921 — May 1, 2020

Margaret (Peg) Conway, 98 of Collingdale passed away Friday, May 1st due to complications of the COVID-19 virus.   She was the beloved wife of the late John (Jack) Conway and is survived by her loving children - Ann Marie Six-Link (Fred), Vincent Conway (Patricia), Patricia Bradley (Michael); seven grandchildren - Kelli Wilson, Kristie Murphy, Katey Patrizio, Joe and Kevin Conway, Colleen and Sean Bradley; and 8 great-grandchildren.  She is pre-deceased by her two children, Kathleen and Joey Conway.

Peg’s family moved to Collingdale when she was 2 and she resided in the same house for 94 years.  She attended St. Joseph’s School in Collingdale and Notre Dame High School in Moylan, PA.   As a child, she used to visit her aunt, Mother Francis, who served alongside Katherine Drexel in the religious order of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament.  Peg grew close to Mother Katherine (now Saint Katherine Drexel) and one of her most treasured possessions was the gift Saint Katherine gave her for her First Holy Communion.

Before, during, and after the Great Depression, her parents took in relatives who needed a place to stay.  Peg continued that tradition and her home was always opened to family members who needed a place to sleep or someone to listen.

She met John Conway, her husband, while she was visiting her brother in Fort Riley, Kansas.  During World War II, Peg worked at Baldwin’s while Jack was stationed in Europe.  They married as soon as the war was over, and celebrated 45 wonderful years together.

Peg loved parties, pinochle and a good manhattan.  Her home was the gathering place where family and friends congregated, card games were played, and the TV was always tuned to the Phillies.  Her good neighbor would often stop by to chat and watch baseball with her.

Countless summers were spent at the Collingdale Swim Club where she worked as the “Gate Lady”.  She never missed a Memorial Day or 4th of July parade on MacDade Blvd.

Peg loved to travel, spend time with her niece at the beach, and play the quarter slots at the Atlantic City Casinos.

A devout Catholic, Peg was very active in her parish.   She sold chances, cleaned the church, was active in Sodality and senior citizens, and most recently, belonged to the Church Ladies – an interesting group of women who attended daily mass then headed for Dunkin Donuts (blueberry muffin and decaf).

Family was most important to Peg.  She loved spending time with her children and their friends, welcoming everyone into her home as family.  She loved when the grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her nieces and nephews were all together.  She was our beloved Mom, Nana, Nan-Nan and Aunt Peg.

The past few years she spent at Saunders House, where she made many new friends with both staff and residents.  She especially enjoyed hanging out with the staff at the nurses’ station.   We would like to thank everyone at Saunders House for the excellent loving care that she received.

Peg would have celebrated her 99th birthday later this month.  We know mom left us surrounded by the angels and her loved ones who went before her, to lead her to heaven.
